Digital Media Audition Information

    Storyboard

  1. The applicant will select 5 images from an image bank of 100 black and white photographs. The applicant will arrange their selected images to create a 5-image Storyboard sequence. The applicant will then write text to accompany each of the 5 images to convey a single story. The applicant will have 40 minutes to complete and assemble the Storyboard. The school will provide all materials. No outside materials or equipment will be allowed.

    Evaluation of the storyboard will be based on:

    • * organization of time and materials and the ability to follow instructions
    • * demonstrated ability to choose images to tell a story
    • * ambition, imagination, concept, complexity and creativity
    • * demonstrated ability to analyze and write text, which illustrate the connection between image and idea
    • * demonstrated ability to interpret the meaning of the photograph and place in the storyboard
  2. Digital Photography

The applicant will have the opportunity to take photographs on campus for 25 minutes using a digital camera provided by the school and will be instructed to record 30 or more images using the list of elements and principles as a point of departure. The applicants will be asked to choose no more than 3 of the elements or principles as their focus. Applicants will edit the images to the 10 best and save them to a CD that is provided. Their CD will include their applicant number and the elements and/or principles they focused on. The applicant will have 40 minutes to edit and burn the CD for a total of 60 minutes. The school will provide the camera, SD memory card, and CD. No outside materials or equipment will be allowed.

    Evaluation of the digital photography exercise will be based on:

    • * organization of time, materials and demonstrated ability to follow instructions
    • * ambition, imagination, concept, complexity and creativity
    • * composition: image orientation, focal point and spatial relationships demonstrated in the selected images
    • * technique: exposure, contrast, saturation and local color/black and white/sepia
    • * integrity of the photographs, which is the ability to relate the images to the chosen theme
  4. Applicant Essay

  5. The applicant will have 15 minutes to respond to the questions below in writing based on the interpretation that Digital Media is the study of:

    • * Photography
    • * Film
    • * Graphic Design
    • * Animation
    • * Multimedia

    Please answer the following questions in 6 sentences or less:

    • Why do you want to study Digital Media at Dreyfoos School of the Arts?
    • How do you currently use digital media as a creative outlet?
    • What are your long-term goals relating to the exploration of digital media?

    Evaluation of the Applicant Essay will be based on:

    • * ability to communicate sincere interest in digital media and Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts

  6. JUNIOR & SENIOR YEAR APPLICANTS ONLY – Applicants entering their senior year will participate in an interview and portfolio review. Juniors and senior applicants will need to bring a portfolio that contains ten pieces of sample work including, but not limited to: film (treatments, scripts, storyboards, DVDs of product), graphic design, web design, and/or photography.

    Evaluation of the portfolio will be based on:

    • * Breadth of Work (sketchbook or journal, variety of techniques and/or materials used)
    • * Focus (reflection of exploration or curiosity of an idea fully)
    • * Quality (striving for excellence in craft, concept, and technique)
    • * Organization (neatness, presentation of work presented)

    Evaluation of the interview will be based on:

    • * Motivation (desire to attend Dreyfoos, prior classes or summer programs, exhibitions, competitions, eagerness to learn and try new ideas, desire to attend college or art program)
    • * Ability to Communicate (explanation of work in regard to concept and/or technique, expression, articulation)
